Use this page for both. A team generator usually means sports, PE, or games. A group generator usually means class projects, workshop breakouts, study groups, or workplace activities. The tool handles both because the underlying task is the same: paste names, choose a group size rule, and split everyone fairly.

How do I split a list into random teams?
Start with the clean list, not the team settings. Put one person on each line, remove anyone who is absent, and add last initials when two people share the same first name. Then choose the number of teams you need and generate all teams at once.
If your goal is a specific group size, work backward from the roster count. For 24 people in groups of 4, choose 6 teams. For 25 people in groups of 4, choose 6 teams if one group of 5 is acceptable, or choose 7 teams if smaller groups are better for the activity.
What if I need random pairs or groups of three?
For pairs, choose enough teams so each team has two people. For example, 20 students need 10 pairs. If the current menu does not show that many teams, use the list randomizer first, then read the shuffled list in pairs or groups of three.
When one person is left over, decide the rule before generating: one group of three, a rotating helper, or a manual assignment to the smallest group. That keeps the result easy to accept and avoids rerolling until the output looks convenient.
How should I handle duplicate names before making groups?
The generator treats every line as a separate person. If two entries say "Alex", both will be included. Add a last initial, number, or role label before generating so the copied team list is clear. If a duplicate line is accidental, remove it before clicking Generate.

Are random teams the same as balanced teams?
Random teams are neutral because every name is shuffled before assignment. They are also even by size as much as the roster allows. That does not automatically mean the teams are equal by skill, age, position, or experience.
If competitive balance matters, separate known strong players or position anchors first, then randomize everyone else. If speed and social neutrality matter more, paste the full list and let the generator split the group.
